Once upon a time there was the Knowledge. Two years travelling the A635 Ashton Old Road and Trinity Way and Regent Road and Portland Street and the backstreets of Ancoats and Timperley and Moss Side. Now anyone could step up and get a carriage in a week. The sat nav told you where to go. The sat nav talked to you all down Princess Parkway and Upper Brook Street and Stretford Road and Chester Road and the motorways (“I’m on the M60, just past Cheadle”) and the bar-lined avenues and suburbs and A roads and B roads and highways and freeways of the Mancunian Way of the Mancunian night. The sat nav talked to you all night long. It was still talking when they found him.
